Getting Older

Getting Older

Getting older does not necessarily mean a person's driving days are over. But it is important to plan ahead and take steps to ensure the safety of your loved ones on the road. NHTSA offers free materials to help you learn more about how to recognize and discuss changes in your older loved one's driving.

Traffic Safety Fact - In 2008, older people accounted for 15 percent of all traffic fatalities and 18 percent of all pedestrian fatalities. Most traffic fatalities involving older drivers in occurred during the daytime (80%), occurred on weekdays (72%), and involved other vehicles (69%).

Resources for People Around Older Drivers

  • Adapting Motor Vehicles for Older Drivers
Evaluate your needs, making sure the vehicle "fits" you properly, choosing appropriatefeatures, installing and knowing how to use adaptive devices, practicing good vehicle maintenance.
  • How to Understand and Influence Older Drivers
Talking with an older person about their driving is often difficult. Most of us delay that talk until the person’s driving has become what we believe to be dangerous. At that point, conversations can be tense and awkward for everyone involved. But there are things you can say and do to make those conversations more productive and less tense.

9 inch 'Sky Heel' is the tallest shoe to hit stores next year

Shoppers are all set to go Gaga for new platforms which will be the highest available on the High Street - at a whopping nine inch heel.

Thanks to 'Poker Face' singer Lady Gaga, shoe lovers have started to demand more monstrous heels.

'Sky Heel', available in sparkly red or gold, will cost less than 40 pounds when they hit the trendy shoe shop Parmars next year, reports the Sun. spokesman for the firm said the design was inspired 'by the catwalk, for the sidewalk'.

"The Sky Heel was fuelled by customer demand to mimic the celebrity look.

We've seen the five-inch and six-inch, and we've even seen the seven-inch heel. The trend is bigger, bigger, bigger - and the Sky Heel is the biggest of them all," he added. (ANI)

First Boeing 747-8 Freighter Leaves Factory

First Boeing 747-8 Freighter Leaves Factory
These images are available for editorial use by news media.
EVERETT, Wash., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA), on Thursday afternoon, towed the first 747-8 Freighter out of the factory in Everett, Wash. The airplane, ultimately destined for Cargolux, will be painted and begin preparations for flight test.
"It is very rewarding to see this airplane transition to the flight test phase," said Mo Yahyavi, 747 program vice president and general manager. "Our employees, suppliers and customers have put a lot of work into making the 747-8 Freighter a reality."

The 747-8 Freighter is the new high-capacity 747 that will give cargo operators the lowest operating costs and best economics of any freighter airplane while providing enhanced environmental performance. It is 250 feet, 2 inches (76.3 m) long, which is 18 feet and 4 inches (5.6 m) longer than the 747-400 Freighter. The stretch provides customers with 16 percent more revenue cargo volume compared to its predecessor. That translates to four additional main-deck pallets and three additional lower-hold pallets.

Boeing has secured 105 orders for the 747-8, 78 of which are orders for the new freighter. Cargolux, Nippon Cargo Airlines, AirBridgeCargo Airlines, Atlas Air, Cathay Pacific, Dubai Aerospace Enterprise, Emirates SkyCargo, Guggenheim and Korean Air all have placed orders for the 747-8 Freighter.
