CBP Officers Seize More Than $480,000 at Douglas Port of Entry

Douglas, Ariz. —U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers stopped an illegal exportation of currency when CBP officers searched a pickup truck and found that $480,000 of undeclared currency was being concealed in the sidewalls of the pickup bed.

The money was concealed within the truck.
On Dec. 15 at approximately 6:30p.m., CBP officers were screening traffic going into Mexico as part of a southbound operation. The officers selected a 2000 GMC Sonoma for further inspection. The vehicle was being driven by a 20-year-old man identified as a Mexican national and resident of Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. With the assistance of a CBP K-9 team the CBP officers discovered that the man was attempting to smuggle more than $480,000 of undeclared currency out of the United States by concealing the money in an elaborately made hydraulic compartment constructed in the side wall of the bed of the pickup.
“These kinds of monies are the direct results of illegal activities,” said Michael Humphries, area port director for the Douglas and Naco ports of entry “There is no doubt that it would have been used to support and assist those activities that threaten our local and national security. Customs and Border Protection remains firm in its commitment to secure our nation’s border.”

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers’ primary mission is anti-terrorism; they screen all people, vehicles, and goods entering the United States, while facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel into and out of the United States. While anti-terrorism is the primary mission of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the inspection process at the ports of entry associated with this mission results in impressive numbers of enforcement actions in all categories.

CBP Officers Seize $1.4 Million of Crystal Meth Douglas Port of Entry

CBP Officers Seize $1.4 Million of Crystal Meth Douglas Port of Entry
Douglas, Ariz. — U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers stopped a drug smuggling attempt when they seized more than 30 pounds of crystal meth concealed inside a non factory compartment built into the fire wall of a vehicle.
On Dec. 10, at approximately 1 p.m., CBP officers were screening traffic coming from Mexico. The officers selected a 2005 Dodge Ram pickup truck for inspection. The vehicle was being driven by an 18-year-old man. The man was identified as a U.S. citizen and resident of Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. The CBP officers discovered the fire wall inside the engine compartment had been altered and was being used to smuggle packages of crystal meth. It was also discovered that the space behind the backseat of the pickup had also been altered and was full of packages of crystal meth. The total weight of crystal meth was more than 30 pounds with an estimated street value of $1.4 million.
“This was a significant seizure,” said Ernestine Morris, assistant port director for the Douglas port of entry. “Crystal meth is a very dangerous and addicting drug and is responsible for the disruption of families and entire communities. Customs and Border Protection remains vigilant as guardians of our nation.”
CBP officers seized the vehicle and the crystal meth. The man was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for further investigation and prosecution.

Face of Defense: Soldier Leads Charge for Charity

By Army Staff Sgt. Matthew E. Winstead
U.S. Army Alaska
ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Dec. 20, 2010 - Army Pfc. Jasmine Irving made her way through the snow-packed streets of downtown Anchorage with a bounty of donated items to benefit area homeless families.

Irving, joined by two of her fellow soldiers and one of their children, was on her way Dec. 17 to unload the donations she had collected over the past few weeks.

"I received approval to do this from the installation and my chain of command, but I did this pretty much on my own," said Irving, a supply clerk with 25th Infantry Division's 4th Brigade, based at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. "I did have help here and there. My friends and coworkers helped out a lot." She set up two collection points on post for donations and raised awareness for the project through flyers she designed and word of mouth.
Originally, Irving's project was intended to benefit a shelter here that's part of Catholic Social Services. However, that facility wouldn't have been able to make full use of the wide variety of items Irving helped collect. Instead, Irving decided to donate to Catholic Social Services as a whole so the items could be sorted and distributed to where they would be most useful.
Ellen Lawlor Krsnak, director of community relations and advocacy for CSS, said she was very pleased to receive the donations. "It warms the heart to see people that take so much from their own time to help others," Krsnak said. "It reminds you that there are good people out there."
CSS will deliver items such as toys and books to places that cater to families and children, and the clothes and food will be given to shelters and the CSS food pantry.
"We will do our very best to make sure that all of the pieces of the donation go to where they will do the very most good," Krsnak said.

U.S. Southern Command Opens New Headquarters

By Arthur McQueen
U.S. Army Garrison Miami
DORAL, Fla., Dec. 20, 2010 - The U.S. Southern Command opened its new $402 million headquarters here in an event that underscored the United States' ongoing partnership with Latin America and marked a new phase of the command's history in South Florida.

This facility "demonstrates the commitment of the U.S. to our partners in Latin America," Air Force Gen. Douglas M. Fraser, Southcom commander, said at the Dec. 17 event. That partnership is carried out by what Fraser called "our great people" working for Southcom. "They are who make the difference, and they have not changed," he said.
Navy Adm. James G. Stavridis, commander of U.S. European Command and former Southcom commander, described the event as a partnership representing the commitment to and the potential of the relationship between the United States and the Americas.
"Represented here are one-half billion people to the South," he said, gesturing to the flags of Latin America and the Caribbean. "The U.S. is but one country in those Americas."
The ceremony also marked a new phase in the command's history as a member of the South Florida community. Miami was selected as the home for Southcom from among 100 sites because of the city's links to the 31 countries and 10 territories in the Caribbean, and Central and South America in the command's area of responsibility.
Following the ceremony, guests toured the immense complex, which encompasses more than 39 football fields of office space. The facility is designed to host more than 2,800 people representing all branches of the armed forces, 13 federal agencies and six Western Hemisphere nations.
The complex features state-of-the-art planning and conference facilities. This capability is showcased in the 45,000-square-foot Conference Center of the Americas, which can support meetings of differing classification levels and multiple translations, information sources and video conferencing. This will support engagement and cooperative activities with military and security forces from across the Americas, ranging from multinational humanitarian assistance operations and military exercises to bilateral training and subject-matter-expert exchanges.
The largest building, the new Southcom headquarters, will serve as a hub for U.S. military coordination with other federal agencies that directly and indirectly support U.S. defense, security and partnership-building activities with Latin America and the Caribbean. Its four stories contain numerous offices, 20 conference rooms and eight training rooms.
SOUTHCOM is one of six Defense Department geographic unified commands and is responsible for U.S. military operations, cooperation and partnership-building in a region that includes 31 countries and 10 territories in the Caribbean, Central America and South America.
