Lake effect snow warning now in effect until 5 PM EST Wednesday

Statement as of 4:08 PM EST on December 07, 2010

The lake effect snow warning is now in effect until 5 PM EST
Wednesday.

* Locations... western southern tier.

* Timing... through Wednesday.

* Accumulations... an additional 8 to 14 inches possible. Bands
will shift... with heaviest additional snow not necessarily in the
same locations which have received the heavy snow so far.

* Winds... west 15 to 30 mph.

* Visibilities... under a quarter mile at times.

* Impacts... severe winter driving conditions at times in heavy
snow along with blowing and drifting snow in open areas. Some
locations have received over three feet of snow. Some roads may
be nearly impassable at times.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

In lake effect snow the weather can vary from locally heavy snow
in narrow bands to clear skies just a few miles away. If you will
be traveling across the region be prepared for rapid changes in
Road and visibility conditions.

If you lose power and plan on running a generator... make sure
that the generator is located outdoors and is properly
ventilated. Space heaters should also be properly ventilated and
used only if they are operating properly. Make sure snow does not
block exhausts and fresh air intakes for high efficiency furnaces
and water heaters.

Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your favorite source of
weather information for the latest updates. Additional details
can also be found at www.Weather.Gov/Buffalo.

Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 4:30 PM EST on December 07, 2010

... Lake effect snow drifting northward...

Multiple bands of lake effect snow originating from Lake Huron and
across Lake Erie will continue across the area.

The most persistent band of snow extended from Dunkirk to South
Dayton to Little Valley.

Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches will occur under this band, and with
a gusty westerly wind will combine to lower visibilities to just a
few hundred feet at times in significant blowing snow.

Outside this persistent band... light to moderate snow showers
will fall across the remainder of the region with snowfall rates
well under an inch per hour.

Roads will continue to be snow covered making for hazardous driving
conditions. Those that must drive should allow for plenty of
extra time to reach their destination.
