CBP Assists in $30M Cocaine Seizure Near Honduras

Washington — U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Air and Marine assisted in the disruption of more than $30 million worth of contraband earlier this month.
On May 12, a Jacksonville-based P-3 aircrew on a Joint Interagency Task Force-South patrol mission detected a surface target of interest northeast of Nicaragua. P-3 crews obtained radar and visual contact of a 40-foot go-fast vessel with four persons on board.
Assets observed the presence of 16 barrels of fuel and 35 to 40 bales of contraband. P-3 aircrews alerted a nearby U.S. Coast Guard Cutter and Honduran law enforcement. USCG launched a rugged hulled inflatable boat, while Honduran law enforcement launched a helicopter and two maritime chase vessels to intercept.
CBP aircraft observed the vessel dump six bales before being intercepted by a Honduran law enforcement maritime vessel. Honduran law enforcement boarded the vessel 20 miles east of the Honduran/Nicaraguan border and recovered 36 bales containing 2,420 pounds of cocaine.
Four suspects were taken into custody by local authorities.

U.S. Border Patrol Set to Expand the R.E.A.L. Mission

Edinburg, Texas — The U.S. Border Patrol along with Pharr Municipal Court Judge Rudy Martinez, Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office, Pharr Police Department and various community organizations will team up to begin the second Rewarding Education, Attitude and Leadership (R.E.A.L.) class on May 31.The first class consisted of nine Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District students that successfully completed the program.
The R.E.A.L. Mission was implemented in the RGV to address at-risk youths and finding alternatives for the students, in lieu of being expelled, transferred or fined.
The second class will incorporate students from both ECISD and the Pharr San Juan Alamo school district. Thanks to Pharr Municipal Judge Rudy Martinez and Pct. #4 Justice of the Peace Homer Jasso, Sr., these students will participate in the five week program that will allow them to focus on community service, life skills, job opportunities, and consequences of making bad choices in their lives.
“The first R.E.A.L. Mission class was a success,” said Chief Patrol Agent Rosendo Hinojosa. “These young students must realize that there are consequences to their bad choices, and this program sheds light on those consequences. The program also reinforces the concept that if they make good choices, such as attend school and do well, there is a lifetime of opportunities waiting for them.”
