CBP Officers Intercept $1.4 Million Ecstasy Smuggling Attempt

Champlain, N.Y. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Office of Field Operations today announced the seizure of approximately 49 pounds of methylene-dioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), better known as the club-drug Ecstasy. The seizure resulted in the arrest of a Canadian citizen.

On June 3, CBP officers encountered 34-year-old Tara Haynes, a Canadian citizen from Montreal, Quebec, as she applied for admission into the U.S. at the Champlain, N.Y., port of entry. Haynes made a negative declaration and advised CBP that she was traveling to New York City to visit her boyfriend. Haynes exhibited nervousness during her primary interview and had difficulty answering additional questions related to her itinerary. As a result, Haynes was referred for a secondary enforcement exam.
In secondary, an inspection was performed on the subject’s vehicle and revealed that the gas tank had been manipulated. CBP officers examined the area underneath the backseat and found that bags of pills had been concealed within the gas tank. The pills field tested positive for properties of MDMA. The bags were found to contain approximately 70,000 pills with a weight of approximately 49 pounds.
The seized narcotics have an estimated street value of $1.4 million.
“This case is an excellent example of the challenges Customs and Border Protection Officers face as they inspect arriving passengers seeking admission to the United States on a day-to-day basis.” said James Engleman, Director of field operations for the Buffalo Field Office. “The detection and seizure of dangerous narcotics attempting to be smuggled into the United States, is one of the primary missions of CBP and contributes to the safety of our communities both locally and throughout the U.S.”
Haynes was arrested on federal charges of importation and possession with the intent to distribute a controlled substance and turned over to agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations for further investigation and prosecution by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.

El Paso Air Branch Intercepts Domestic Air Smuggler

El Paso, Texas — On June 1, CBP Air and Marine Operations Center requested the launch of an interceptor aircraft from the El Paso Air Branch to track a suspect aircraft that had just departed Oceanside, Calif. Detection enforcement officers suspected the Piper Cherokee airplane and owner were engaged in domestic air smuggling. The branch dispatched a Cessna Citation C-550 to intercept and a Cessna 210 from the Albuquerque air unit to assist.
A short while after an air-to-air intercept was completed, the suspect and trailing OAM aircraft landed at Dalhart Airport in the panhandle of Texas. The suspect pilot and passenger were questioned by Air and Marine agents, and subsequently refused to consent to a search of their aircraft. AMOC coordinated the response of Texas State Troopers and a canine officer, as well as special agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations.

The canine alerted to the possible presence of narcotics in the aircraft, and a subsequent search of the aircraft revealed the presence of 68 kilograms of high-grade “hydro” marijuana and $8,000 in cash. The contraband, aircraft, pilot and passenger were turned over to HSI special agents for federal prosecution.

"This is yet another excellent example of the extraordinary capabilities that our motivated and skilled Enforcement Specialists at AMOC bring to our battle against narcotics smuggling. It is also a classic example of the mutually supportive partnership that ICE HSI and Office of Air and Marine continue to forge in its joint efforts to protect America," said Mike Wimberly, director of air operations for the El Paso Air Branch.
