TSA Announces Key Milestone in Cargo Screening on Passenger Aircraft

TSA Announces Key Milestone in Cargo Screening on Passenger Aircraft

WASHINGTON —The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) today announced the airline industry has met a key requirement of the 9/11 Act by screening 100 percent of air cargo on domestic passenger aircraft.

TSA worked closely with the cargo and aviation industries to fulfill this important Congressional mandate by the Aug. 1, 2010 deadline. TSA continues to utilize a multi-layered approach to air cargo security, including procedures for known and established shippers to ship cargo on domestic passenger aircraft, deploying explosive detection canine teams, and conducting covert tests and no-notice inspections of cargo operations.

"TSA has taken another step forward in strengthening the security of air travel,” said TSA Administrator John S. Pistole. “Screening all cargo on domestic passenger aircraft adds another layer to our already robust security system and ensures that TSA is doing everything possible to ensure the safety of air travel.”

TSA is also continuing its work to improve cargo security on passenger flights originating in other countries. TSA requires 100 percent of high risk cargo to undergo security screening and has increased the requirements for overall cargo screening.

“International air cargo is more secure than it has ever been,” added Pistole. “TSA continues to work closely with our international partners and is making substantial progress toward meeting the 100 percent mark in the next few years.”

To meet the mandate, TSA created the Certified Cargo Screening Program (CCSP), which allows certified facilities across the country to screen cargo before it reaches the airport. CCSP facilities must be approved by TSA and adhere to strict security standards, including physical access controls, personnel security, and screening of prospective employees and contractors. A secure chain of custody must also be established from the screening facility to the aircraft.

Prior to the Aug. 1 deadline, over 900 facilities became CCSP certified. This innovative program spreads the cargo screening responsibility, on a voluntary basis, throughout the supply chain to manufacturing facilities and distribution centers. This distributed screening effort has enabled over half of the more than 9 million pounds of cargo loaded onboard passenger-carrying planes each day to be prescreened, avoiding potential bottlenecks at airports.

Religious Events of Ramadan

Ramadan, a religious event for persons of the Muslim faith, begins around August 11, 2010, and ends on September 9, 2010. TSA has reminded its security workforce that traveling passengers may be observed at various areas in the airport - including security checkpoints or on aircraft - engaged in religious practices and meditations during Ramadan. TSA would also like to inform the traveling public that they may notice passengers observing Ramadan engaging in the following activities at the airports:

1. Passengers observing Ramadan will abstain from any food, water, smoking or vices of any kind.
2. Passengers observing Ramadan are more likely to engage in prayer at the airports or on airplanes while traveling than at other times during the year.
3. Before prayer, Muslims go through ablution, i.e., a cleansing or washing of certain areas of the body that is usually done in private if possible, but may be observed in airport restrooms.
4. Passengers observing Ramadan may be seen reading, listening to or orally reciting the Holy Qur’an at airports and on airplanes.
5. Passengers observing Ramadan may carry prayer beads and “whisper” prayers constantly.

TSA offers a reminder to their employees

Ramadan, a religious event for persons of the Muslim faith, begins around August 11, 2010, and ends on September 9, 2010. TSA has reminded its security workforce that traveling passengers may be observed at various areas in the airport - including security checkpoints or on aircraft - engaged in religious practices and meditations during Ramadan. TSA would also like to inform the traveling public that they may notice passengers observing Ramadan engaging in the following activities at the airports:

1. Passengers observing Ramadan will abstain from any food, water, smoking or vices of any kind.

City to celebrate opening of new green space and natural playground in Hydro Block

City to celebrate opening of new green space and natural playground in Hydro Bloc

Councillor Adam Vaughan (Ward 20 Trinity-Spadina) along with Toronto Community Housing (TCH) and representatives of Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds will join local residents to celebrate the opening of the accessible, natural playground and public park with a community planting.

Date: Monday, August 16

Times:
6 p.m. - Community planting
7:30 p.m. - Barbecue
8 p.m. - Official opening

Location: Hydro Block, 6 Henry St.

The playground was designed by Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds through consultations with the community and TCH, and was made possible through matching contributions from THC and the City of Toronto totalling $60,000.

With rolling green hills, soaring trees, bright flowers, slides, seating and water features, the new spaces will reconnect children and adults alike to the natural world and provide a setting for them to connect with one another.

About Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds:
Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds engages communities to re-imagine and rebuild their green space through better designs, partnerships, and programs that connect their children and adults to nature. The parks and playgrounds we create reflect the natural heritage of the site and the needs of the community through a collaborative and inclusive design process, a skilled team of installers and well orchestrated community builds. Rolling hills, curling pathways, and giant logs and boulders and trees define spaces filled with art, music, and nature. These are playgrounds without barriers where children and families are encouraged to explore the limits of their imagination. This is the place in our community where we form four critical bonds with nature and each other. Projects can be found in public parks and at schools and child care centres across Canada and the USA. For more information, please visit www.naturalplaygrounds.ca.
