7 Ways to Avoid Traffic Violations

By Hugo Shreuder
We've all heard the Nancy Reagan theory of avoiding traffic tickets... "Just say No, kids"! As sage as that advice is, sometimes when you are behind the wheel it can seem that you just don't have a choice in whether to do something that violates the road rules. Today we look at some of the practical reasons that people have for risking their car insurance Rating 1 by getting traffic tickets, as well as some of the practical things that you can do to eliminate those reasons!

1. Buy a car with cruise control

Are you a creeper? Speed creep doesn't always have the serious consequences you see on the road safety campaign advertisements... but much more often, it will increase your car insurance premiums by earning you a traffic ticket. Cars of the age that are likely to have cruise control (ten years old or younger) are also much safer and more comfortable in general.

2. Always have a designated driver at hand

They're handy little things... unfortunately organising a designated driver is as easy as simply remembering to bring your breath mints when you go out partying. If you make it a habit, though, you can avoid becoming one of the alarmingly prevalent statistics about serious injuries and deaths caused by drunk driving.

3. Get a personal breath tester

This is a very simple, practical step you can take to ensure you don't 'accidentally' get a drink driving ticket. People - including current and potential employers, your Mum, your partner, and society at large - usually frown upon drink driving, especially if you say that you 'Didn't think you were over the limit'. That lack of awareness of your actions can seem even more dangerous than simply making a bad decision or taking a risk.

You can get disposable single use breathalysers from around $5 each, or grab a handheld personal unit for around $300. Beware the cheap units... the police won't forgive you if your cheap knockoff model told you that you were under the limit.

4. Get a hands-free kit or Bluetooth kit for your car

Driver distraction is rapidly being recognised as one of the major causes of accidents, and talking and texting on a mobile phone is one of the leading causes of distraction. You can simply remove the potential need to pick up an important call while you are driving by installing a hands-free kit or Bluetooth kit for your car, and making it a habit to 'plug' your phone into it every time you hop in the car.

5. Always leave early

This is nothing more than a matter of habit. It is easy to underestimate the time it will take us to get ready and travel somewhere. If you don't want to risk car insurance claims caused by driving over the speed limit, teach yourself to leave ten minutes earlier than you think you'll need to, every time.

6. Play it safe with red lights - stop before the line, stop early

Even city drivers can be caught out by the timing or orange lights at different intersections. This is another tip for which the implementation comes down to taking advantage of the (very powerful) force of habit.

7. Check the road rules regularly

They do change occasionally! The National Transport Commission website publishes updated versions every so often - teach yourself to check these guidelines when you change the batteries on your smoke alarms and turn the clocks back for daylight saving.
