NIGHT TIME TRAVEL LANE CLOSURES OF WESTBOUND MAIN STREET/NY ROUTE 25 IN RIVERHEAD, SUFFOLK COUNTY BEGIN TONIGHT, MONDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2011For the protection of motorists, all westbound travel lanes on Main Street/NY Route 25, between Raynor Avenue and Howell Avenue in downtown Riverhead, Suffolk County, will be closed to motorists at night beginning tonight, Monday, October 17, 2011. The westbound Main Street closures will take place between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and will continue each night for approximately three weeks weather permitting. No street parking will be permitted during this construction work. Westbound motorists will be detoured to County Route 58. Utilizing lane shifts, eastbound Main Street traffic will be maintain through the construction area. Main Street/NY Route 25 motorists are urged to use alternate routes or they will experience delays. These travel lane closures are needed to continue repairing the deteriorated pavement of NY Route 25 in the Town of Riverhead under a five mile, $4.5 million resurfacing and drainage improvement project. The top layer of the worn, distressed pavement is being removed then replaced with new asphalt and fresh pavement markings. When completed, these pavement repairs and drainage improvements will help prolong the integrity of the road. In addition, handicapped curb ramps at certain locations have been provided. As with any roadway project, this operation is weather dependent and may be canceled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather. Local officials, businesses, and emergency service providers have been notified about the night time travel lane closures. Motorists who cannot use alternate routes are reminded to drive carefully through the work zone, follow the posted detour, and obey the posted construction speed limit and the direction of the flag person for their safety as well as the safety of the highway work crew. Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license. The New York State Department of Transportation appreciates the patience and cooperation of motorists, and the local community as this pavement improvement work is undertaken to help assure the continued protection of all motorists. |
