1. IN JAN 2010, COMMANDER ATLANTIC AREA (LANTAREA), COMMANDER PACIFIC
AREA (PACAREA), THE DEPUTY COMMANDANT FOR OPERATIONS (DCO), AND THE
COAST GUARD CHIEF OF STAFF DEVELOPED DIVERSITY ACTION PLANS RELEVANT
TO THEIR ORGANIZATIONAL FOCUS IN AN EFFORT TO OPTIMIZE WORKFORCE
READINESS AND MEET THE MARITIME CHALLENGES OF THE 21ST CENTURY. THE
RESULTANT PLANS IDENTIFY ACTION ITEMS THAT WILL HELP THE COAST GUARD
ACHIEVE ITS STRATEGIC DIVERSITY GOALS AS OUTLINED IN REF A.
2. REF B REQUIRES THAT QUARTERLY PROGRESS REPORTS AND UPDATES BE
SUBMITTED TO COMDT (CG-1). AS A FOLLOW-ON TO REF C, THE FOLLOWING
UPDATES ARE PROVIDED TO OUTLINE THE PROGRESS AND INITIATIVES THAT
HAVE BEEN ACCOMPLISHED IN THE LAST QUARTER.
3. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE LAST 90 DAYS:
A. LED AND PARTICIPATED IN SEA SERVICE LEADERSHIP ASSOCIATION
(SSLA) SPONSORED WOMENS LEADERSHIP SYMPOSIUM. OVER 200 COAST GUARD
MEMBERS FROM ALL DISTRICTS ATTENDED, INCLUDING A SIGNIFICANT SENIOR
LEADERSHIP CONTINGENT LED BY VADM BRICE-OHARA, WHO DELIVERED THE
KEYNOTE ADDRESS.
B. LED AND PARTICIPATED IN FIRST JOINT ASSOCIATION OF NAVAL
SERVICES OFFICERS (ANSO) AND NATIONAL NAVAL OFFICERS ASSOCIATION
(NNOA) CONFERENCE. OVER 150 COAST GUARD MEMBERS FROM ALL DISTRICTS
ATTENDED, INCLUDING A SIGNIFICANT SENIOR LEADERSHIP CONTINGENT LED BY
ADM PAPP WHO DELIVERED THE KEYNOTE ADDRESS. OTHER SPEAKERS INCLUDED
THE VICE COMMANDANT, CHIEF OF STAFF, COMMANDER PACIFIC AREA,
COMMANDER ATLANTIC AREA, AND MASTER CHIEF PETTY OFFICER OF THE COAST
GUARD.
C. COAST GUARD LEADERSHIP AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (CG-133)
IS
CURRENTLY DEVELOPING MODULAR, WEB-BASED MENTORING TRAINING THAT WILL
BE IMPLEMENTED IN THE LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM. ADDITIONALLY, THE
CHIEF PETTY OFFICER ACADEMY, THE CHIEF WARRANT OFFICER ACADEMY, AND
THE SENIOR LEADERSHIP PRINCIPALS AND SKILLS COURSE HAVE ALL COMMITTED
TO BUILDING A MENTORING INTRODUCTION MODULE INTO THEIR CURRICULA.
THESE TRAINING MODULES WILL FOCUS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF MENTORING AND
THE INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN SYSTEM IN ORDER TO LEVERAGE THE
MENTORING CULTURE WITH OUR DEVELOPING LEADERS.
D. CONTINUED TO DEVELOP AND EXECUTE A STRATEGIC DIVERSITY
COMMUNICATIONS CAMPAIGN THAT INCLUDES ARTICLES AND PRESS RELEASES,
AND ENCOURAGES THE USE OF BLOGS AND OTHER SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES.
THE COAST GUARD HAS PUBLISHED OVER TEN ARTICLES HIGHLIGHTING
DIVERSITY INITIATIVES IN THE LEADERSHIP NEWS, THE COMPASS BLOG, AND
NUMEROUS DIVERSITY-RELATED MAGAZINES AND PUBLICATIONS. FURTHERMORE,
THE DIVERSITY STAFF HAS REGULARLY UPDATED THE OFFICE OF DIVERSITY
WEBSITE WITH PERTINENT INFORMATION AND PUBLISHED DOCUMENTS REGARDING
THE VALUE OF DIVERSITY, CG PREGNANCY POLICIES, AND OTHER
DIVERSITY-RELATED ISSUES.
E. THE DIVERSITY STAFF HAS IMPLEMENTED A NEW INFORMAL RECOGNITION
PROGRAM CALLED DIVERSITY CHAMPION OF THE WEEK. EACH WEEK, THE
DIVERSITY STAFF WILL PUBLISH RECOGNITION FOR A COAST GUARD MEMBER OR
UNIT WHO HAS MADE SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE PROGRESS OF THE
DIVERSITY STRATEGIC PLAN AND THE OPTASK DIVERSITY CAMPAIGN. THIS
PROGRAM WILL BE AVAILABLE ON THE OFFICE OF DIVERSITY WEBSITE,
WWW.USCG.MIL/DIVERSITY.
